Helpful Items

Do you have the water you need?

Do you have food to eat?

Do you have the medications you need?

What about diapers and formula for babies?

Here are suggestions for you on what to store, how to store and where to get it.

Many things you already have at home, you just need to organize it.

We've been told not to rely on any help in a major emergency for at least 72 hours.
From what we've seen in the New Orleans area, this is very true.

Be prepared and ready in case it happens to you!!!!!

WHAT TO DO
Ready America - site about emergency preparedness from Department of Homeland Security
Have a plan - find a downloadable family communication plan form on this page - you must plan ahead
If you have to evacuate - let people know where you are going - leave a note - help others leave too - know how to turn off your utilities
This may require a special wrench to turn off your gas at the meter.

WHAT TO HAVE

Shelter & bedding
- you may not be able to stay inside your home. Have some type of tent, blankets or sleeping bags
Clothing - jackets and extra clothing are a must
Cooking Items - a barbecue, portable stove or similar item is helpful. Also, you'll need pots or something to cook in.
Sanitation - Bathrooms will not function during a disaster. Be prepared with a portable toilet or know how to make a latrine

COMMUNICATION

Remember that phone service and particularly cell phone service will probably be out of commission in a real disaster. You need a way to communicate with your family and friends and to receive important newscasts.

ESSENTIALS

Water
- without it, you can't survive - you need a MINIMUM of 1 gallon per person per day (don't forget your pets)

Small containers may be carried with you. Good for car or evacuations
Large 55 Gallon barrels are good for home. Keep these big barrels for other uses and the small ones for drinking.
You just can't have too much water.

Is your water pure? You'll need a test kit to find out.

Lighting

Remember, you probably won't have any electricity in an emergency. Have several different types of lighting available for your family. Choose from many types - Lanterns, Strobe lights, emergency candles, all types of flashlights from shake to solar, light sticks, matches, battery-less lights and more.

Need to re-charge your batteries or other items when there is no electricity. Try a solar charger.

Coleman 1W Power Sport Charger
Coleman 7A Solar Charge Controller
Coleman 18W Solar Battery Charger

Food

Freeze dried foods are always a good choice in an emergency. Also try to have food storage for at least three months.

Make sure you have cooking utensils to use outside of your home just in case. They are great for camping too!

Water is SOOOO important we had to mention it again!!!!

YOU MUST HAVE WATER TO SURVIVE - ORDER WATER CONTAINERS HERE
1 gallon per person per day is a MINIMUM

Small containers may be carried with you. Good for car or evacuations
Large 55 Gallon barrels are good for home. Keep these big barrels for other uses and the small ones for drinking.
You just can't have too much water.

Things to think about:

1) Your 72 hr kit should be in a portable container located near an exit of your house or better, sheltered in your backyard.

2) Each family member should have their own 72 hr kit with food, clothing and water. Distribute heavy items between kits.

3) Enclose the extra clothing, matches, personal documents, and other items damageable by smoke or water in plastic to protect them.

4) Keep a light source in the top of your 72 hr kit, so you can find it quickly in the dark.

5) Personalize your 72 hr kit. Make sure you fill the needs of each family member.

6) Inspect your kit at least twice a year. Rotate food and water every six months. Don't forget to check your medications. Check children's clothing for proper fit. Adjust clothing for winter or summer needs. Check expiration dates on batteries, light sticks, warm packs, food and water.

7) Consider the needs of elderly people as well as those with handicaps or other special needs. For example: for babies, store diapers, washcloth, ointment, bottles and pacifiers, and other special supplies.
