Seward, Alaska Historical Events

2000, 3 March
Congratulations to Mayor Edgar Blatchford for recognizing the heroic efforts of the Seward High ski team and coaches to come to the aid of a family in distress on the Seward Highway last week. And congratulations to the coaches and team members for all they did to assist in the tragedy.

1964 - Spring, Good Friday
In 1964, on Good Friday, there was a huge earthquake which registered approximately 8.6 on the Richter scale. I was one of seven children who survived the quake. I was taken up into the mountains to avoid the tidal wave that washed away most of the town. Our home and all of our belongings were lost. We left Seward and moved to Oregon, then Minnesota.

I will never forget seeing the wall of water rolling in from the ocean or the explosions of the oil barrels across the street from our home. I was separated from my youngest brother following the quake and have not seen him since. I know he was adopted by another family and to my knowledge still lives in Alaska. The earthquake changed our lives dramatically! I hope to meet my brother again someday.
