In the early 1900’s, the town of Knik was the place the trappers and miners went to for supplies. When Wasilla was founded in 1917 after the Alaska Railraod came through, most residents of nearby Knik relocated to the new town. Some people even pulled their homes over to Wasilla from Knik. As Knik became deserted, Wasilla kept on growing. Wasilla was incorporated in 1974. As Wasilla took on some prominance, there was a push to move the state capital to the town from Juneau but the initiative was barely defeated in 1994. Another boon to the area was the Mat-sup Reigonal Medical Center, a new regional hospital that opened in 2006.
The town’s name is for a local Dena’ina leader, Chief Wasilla. The name is supposed to mean breath of air but there are some that say it is a Russian form of the name, William.
