Government

Much of the more densely populated parts of the state are divided into boroughs, which function in a manner similar to counties in other states. Boroughs do not cover the entire land area of the state. The area of Alaska not part of any borough is referred to as the unorganized borough.

For the 1970 census, the government of Alaska and the U.S. Census Bureau divided the unorganized borough into census areas. However, these areas exist solely for the purposes of statistical analysis and presentation. They have no government of their own. There are services provided by borough governments that are provided directly by the Alaska state government in the unorganized borough.

over 70% of residents are Alaska Natives.
One third of the area's population live in the four largest communities, Galena, Fort Yukon, Nenana, and McGrath. The area is very sparsely populated and largely undeveloped.

Location:

This area is in the Alaskan Interior and goes from the Canadian border to the lower Yukon River.

Climate:

Most of this area has a cold and continental climate with long harsh winters and short warm summers. Nearly all areas have low winter temperature below 0 degrees F. all winter. Many communities have sustained periods of -40 or below. Summer temperatures tend to be in the low to mid 70's most of the season.

Snowfall varies between 40 and 110 inches annually in most areas

Geography:

Total area: 148,250 square miles
Land area: 145,900 square miles
Water area: 1,943 square miles
The area is 1.31% water
The area is about the same size as the entire state of Montana.

Five national wildlife refuges and several mountain ranges are within the census area

The Yukon River is the major waterway and also the Kuskokwim River. The Yukon flows nearly 1,100 miles in a southwesterly direction

Rivers are important to the region as transportation as well as for recreation. Most areas have only river and air access. In the summer, riverboats use the waterways while in winter, when the rivers freeze over, they serve as ice roads to other settlements. Since only seven communities in the area have road access, alternate transportation becomes very important.

Economy:

Since this is a sparsely populated area, and also one with extreme weather in the winter, year-round employment is rare. Most employment is through the government. The other major employment sector is with the Alaska Native organizations in the area. Subsistence is still the mainstay of the local economy.

In 1999, 23.8% of the population was below federal poverty standards.
