COUNTY GOVERNMENT
Clayton was established in 1832 as the County Seat of Barbour County, Alabama. The new county of Barbour was established by the Alabama Legislature on December 18, 1832. The yet to be decided location of the county seat was to be in the center of the county and named Clayton. Clayton continues to be the County Seat of Barbour.
