Coffeeville, Alabama Historical Events

1995, February 3
On February 3,1995, Coffeeville lost two of its most valuable citizens.Mr.& Mrs. Woodie Earl Pugh Sr. were killed in a car accident inSalitpa, Alabama approximately 7 miles from home. They both servedtheir community through time and talents in many ways. They workedduring the 60's to help develop some of the rights, we so now takefor granted. They were very active members in the Union MissionaryBaptist, where Mr. Pugh served as the Chairman of the DeaconBoard. He also was a retired educator in the Choctaw County schoolsystem. At the time of the accident Mrs. Pugh served as Bailiff atthe Clarke County Courthouse. In honor of their memory, Coffeevillenamed a street after them where they resided for many years, PughLane. These two people are missed in this community, especially byyours truly, the youngest of their five children. But, I do not grieveas one without hope. I trust in God and believe that we will meetagain some day. But until that day, we hold and cherish thememories. Submitted by Lisa Pugh-Rogers

A group of young men accomplished one of the greatest sports upsets ever. The c-ville Panthers upset the Jackson?. I forgot the score, but we won big! The coach was Coach Carr. The starting 5 were: John Howze, (26 points that game), John Osborne, Fredrick Taite, Terry Pugh, and Tony Moody. We proved that a small town team with a lot of heart could get the job done. Don't know if Jackson has been beaten since then, but we did it, GO PANTHERS. I hear that John D. Howze was quite a basketball player in his day.
