A history page for Delmar.
Originally known as Frog Level! They say it was named such for the swampy area of that time. By the 1880's, the residents wanted a post office in their community and petitioned for one to be opened. To their surprise, there was already a Frog Level with a post office in the state of Alabama. That Frog Level is now known as Fayette. In order to get a post office, there had to be a name change!
The name of Delmar began to be used around 1887. It is not known for sure why the name was chosen, but popular belief has it that one of the railroad construction engineers had a retired race horse named Delmar. Everyone liked the horse and when the railroad work was finished, the town was renamed for the horse, Delmar! The new town of Delmar promply applied to the Post Office Department and was given a new post office for Delmar. The first Postmaster was Newton L. Powell.
