The Winslet brothers first came here in the early 1800’s to farm. Soon other families arrived and lived along side the local Creek tribe. As more settlers came, an inevitable war with the Creeks. The conflict led to the Creek Indian War. Finally, in 1832, a treaty was signed. It was at the time of the Treaty that Barbour County and Eufaula were created. Eufaula was then known as Irwinton for General William Irwin. The name change came because of confusion with a Georgia city of the same name.

Built in 1884 by Eli Shorter, II and his wife Wileyna Lamar. The mansion was remodeled by the Shorters in 1906, adding the front porch with its seventeen columns.
