Gantts Quarry Community News

1939-1945
I lived in Gantts Quarry from 1939-45. Before the WWII, this was a great era for the marbleindustry. It was the only city with a golf course which had marble seats. Many visitors come there to seethe deep quarries and buy marble accessories: Lamps, chess boards, tables, fireplaces, headstones, etc. My uncle, John Clackum, was a letterer and carved out names, writings, quotes, etc on all kinds of marble implements. The Quarry lake was wonderful! My cousin, John Clackum, Jr, was the lifeguard. Schools and churches were enjoyable to attend. I was taken from the streets of Miami and placed in this rural community--the best thing that ever happened to me!
