Oneonta is an Indian name interpreted as "the place we seek,"or " the place of many rocks" or "where the rocks hang down." It became the county seat in 1889 and was incorporated February 18, 1891. Many of the Indian fighters with Andrew Jackson and John Coffee returned and settled here. In 1889, when the courthouse was movedto Oneonta, there was a depot, a post office, a telegraph office, three stores, the Farmers Alliance Building and several residences.
