He was born in New Hampshire, and later came to Georgia to build homes. While in Georgia, he partnered with Samuel Griswold, a cotton gin manufacturer. When the company wanted to expand into Alabama in 1835, he purchased a large quantity of land which would eventually become downtown Prattville.
