A history page for Russellville.
A military road to be built under the direction of General Andrew Jackson after the War of 1812, was the reason for the building up of Russellville. Major William Russell, who was an officer in the army, helped to build the road. After it was finished, he returned to the area and built a cabin a little over 2 miles from where present-day Russellville lies. A few years later, all of the settlers moved up the road a bit near Gaines Trace Road and Jackson Military Road. This is where the city began, named for Major Russell. It was incorporated on 27 November 1819 and was named the county seat for Franklin County just a month later.
