Vance history:

Here is a history page for Vance

David M. Lindley was one of the first settlers in the area around 1822. He established a tavern there soon afterward. In 1830, the area became known as the town of Trion. A post office was established here in 1849. In 1872, the town was renamed Smallwood for Charles Smallwood, a local sawmill operator. Once again, in 1879, the town was renamed. To honor Dr. William Vance, the town was called Vance. He died in 1898 and was buried in the Vance Family Cemetery.
