History & History Related Items
Ash Flat was named by the first postmaster, Joseph M. McCord, and a group of local residents, who gave the name after a flat area of ash trees nearby. It became an official town in December, 1856.
Later in the 19th century, the town has a gin mill which was used extensively in northeast Arkansas for trading of lumber and crop produce. It was also known as one of the first towns in Sharp County to have a working telephone operator switchboard.
Ash Flat not only became the consolidated county seat in 1967, but the federal, state and county governments also came to Ash Flat.
