Cushman was once the largest city in Independence County. The mineral, manganese, was, and still is, plentiful here. During the war, the town had a dance hall, movie theaters, and at least two general stores. After the war, the "boom town" suffered greatly. It still survives and thrives with its mysterious caves and beautiful streams.
