History & History Related Items Fayetteville history: The land in the area was originally owned by the Osage Indians. Then ownership passed to the Shawnees, Delawares and finally to the Cherokees. After the Cherokee Treaty in 1828, the land was opened to settlers. The Butterfield Stage Line ran through Fayetteville between 1858 and 1861. Fayetteville was a large Civil War area. The major battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove were fought near here. The Univesity of Arkansas was completed in 1874. The materials for the first buildings were brought in by wagon.
