Helena Community News

I am seeking your assistance in this family history quest of mine.
My name is Shangz Rochelle Farzanegan (married name). My maiden name is Shangz Rochelle Brown. My Father's name is Robert Brown, Jr. My Uncle’s (my father's half brother) name is Nolan Roberts. His father's name was John Roberts. John Robert's father's name was Samuel Roberts and his mother's name was Mary Nolan.

John Roberts would be 100 years old this year. He was born in 1898. According to my uncle's best recollection John Roberts (his father) was from Helena, Arkansas during the time when most African-Americans were moving from their small hometowns to Detroit (Motor City) to join the booming Ford Company. The population (again to his best recollection) was very small with no new prospects let alone hope for employment. If my understanding is correct, John Roberts was run out of town because he told the African-Americans to basically pack up and leave to go to Detroit, because there was money there.

So, my question for you is this. Where can someone like me (Nolan Robert’s (technically 1/2) niece) find the history of Helena, Arkansas at that time when African-Americans were moving to Detroit because of the money to be earned there due to the success of the Ford Company.
Thanks, curious niece - Shangz Farzanegan
