Though the exact origin of the name is unknown there are some favorite explanations. Some say it is from the green color of the Little Buffalo River. One of the more well-known naming stories is how the early settlers were treated well by the Cherokees there. When they heard of the hardships they had endured on the Trail of Tears, the wanted to show them the kindness they had been given by the Indians. They shared their food, shelter, medicine to the newcomers, helped them hunt, gather and recuperate. As the group prepared to move on, the residents asked for help in naming their new village. A Cherokee Chief, John Ross, is said to have retreated into the hills to pray for hours over the naming of the village. When he returned, he said the name should be Jasper. The chief said, "Jasper is a hard and strong stone, lighted from inside by love. It is like the men of this ridge, strong men, good men, lighted from within by love."
