Monticello is home to the University of Arkansas at Monticello Also, in the 1990s, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission and the city built & stocked "Lake Monticello." If future water demand exceeds supply, the lake will be used as a reservoir. Until that time, it is home to some quality bass fishing.

Monticello City Government
Monticello has a mayor-council form of government.The city is protected by an 18-member police force. The Monticello Fire Department operates four engines, two rescue vehicle and a rescue boat from three stations. The fire department is staffed by 11 career firefighters and 12 paid-per-call firefighters. Emergency medical service is provided by a private company, Monticello Ambulance Service, Inc. MASI provides advanced cardiac life support with two ambulances staffed by paramedics.
