Ola, Arkansas Historical Events

2001, December
I just want to tell you about a couple of the city leaders. First, there is the Mayor. She is the first woman mayor the town has ever had. Her name is Sherian Carter. She was elected to office after the last mayor resigned. Mayor Carter has worked very hard from day one.

The second person you need to know about is Beth Anderson. She is the Police Chief. Beth has held her position for about six years and is probably one of the best officers I have worked for. Thatís right, she is my boss.

These two women, with the help of some other town members, have tried to bring a small Arkansas town into the 21st Century. They have organized events like Old Time Days, which is a way the town raises money for things like park equipment, school crossing lights or things the city needs. They are both active participants in the "Cops for Kids" program to help less privileged kids in the town.

These two women should be remembered in the town history not only for being the first women to hold these offices, but because they may just help this town survive another hundred years!
