History & History Related Items

Williford was formed from land owned by William Amborse Williford. The town was named for this him. Williford is in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and lies along the Spring River. Settlers came and built their homes on both sides of the river and by 1870, the area had over 275 residents. The railroad came to town on 1 October 1833, bringing with it business and success. But when the Great Depression of the 1930’s came along, Williford suffered from its effects. The quarry closed because it had no where to market the product. The bank closed as many did during that time. A major fire in 1929 destroyed many businesses and with the depression, they were never able to fully recover. Though business never really recovered, the area remains a beautiful and peaceful are in which to live.

Attractions

Williford, Arkansas is one of the smallest towns in Arkansas, yet has a mayor, city council, water system, library, four-truck fire department, and a school system of almost 300 students. The town is located on the Spring River in a pretty valley. Many of its residents are elderly. The town itself experiences a very low crime rate although it has no police department. Taxes and property costs are low. It is a quiet place to live in a rural setting with abundant fishing and hunting resources in the area. There are also areas for camping, canoeing and other outdoor recreation.
