Acton was founded in 1887. It was named for Acton, Massachusetts, the hometown of a local miner. Acton was once considered for the state capital! Henry T. Gage, owner of the local Red Rover Mine, was governor of the state from 1899 to 1903. At this time, he attempted to relocate the capitol to Acton.
