Setters began to come into the area which had rich soil and a good water supply. There are a number of artesian wells from which it is presumed the community was named. In 1906, the Artesia Improvement Company was formed to develop a townsite. Artesia was known for its dairy farms from the 1920's until urban sprawl forced the dairies further inland.
