Bakersfield history:
Bakersfield was founded in 1869 by Colonel Thomas Baker. In 1889, a fire almost destroyed the entire town. As a result, much of Bakersfield was modernized (according to 1890 standards, of course). Oil was discovered in 1899. The oil continued to produce and fuel the economy in the area. Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County, one of the largest counties in the state. Wineries produce nearly 25% of all wine in the state. In the Spring, you can be treated to a beautiful display of colorful flowers. The Sequoia National Forest is nearby.
