During the middle of the 1800's, the area that is now Baldwin Park was land for grazing cattle of the San Gabriel Mission. Homesteaders appeared around 1875. The area was first known as Pleasant View with all the small farms and vineyards locally. The name was changed to Vineland in 1880. The actual community of Baldwin Park was established in 1906 by Elias J. Baldwin (1828-1909). Baldwin Park was named for this wealthy landowner. He wanted to build a new town next to Vineland named Baldwinville. This upset local residents who invited him to come to a meeting about the problem. While there, he was "saved" from injury by the shopkeeper's wife. By the end of the evening, the new town was no longer a threat and Vineland was to become Baldwin Park.
