Benicia was founded in 1847 and had the distinction of being the state capitol from 1853 to 1854 (a total of just thirteen months). Benicia was named for Dona Benicia, the wife of Spain's last Commandant General of the Mexican forces in California, General Vallejo. He also happened to own the land upon which the city is located!
