The city was named for George Berkeley, the Bishop of Cloyne, an 18th Century philosopher. It was once a portion of the huge Rancho San Antonio. A group of developers bought the townsite and soon afterward the College of California was founded. We know the system today as the major University of California. Berkeley is the home of the principal campus of this university system. In 1906, Berkeley was majorly affected by the great earthquake in San Francisco across the bay. Many refugees from the city came across the bay to live. In September, 1923, a major fire destroyed a majority of the city. The city was quickly rebuilt with a major addition - the nation's premier fire-prevention system. The city has a good climate and is often referred to as "one of America's most refreshing cities."
