Reflections on Beverly Hills from a former resident:
For many years there was an oil well with a 200 ft high derrick reaching up into the Beverly Hills sky in the school yard of Beverly Hills High School. Right next to the football field and track was a well that produced 90 barrels of high quality crude oil. The Beverly Hills Board of Education relied on the well for hefty royalties for lo all those years as supplemental income. During Ronald Reagan's tenure as President of the United States his private presidential helicopter would take off and land exclusively from that same football field.
About a mile north of he high school, as the crow flies, was the residential neighborhood where Howard Hughes crashed his experimental plane into a house and almost lost his life.
Across the street from BHHS on Robbins Drive, 9938 1/2, a famous mafia hoodlum lived for 6 or 7 years - his name, Mickey Cohen. He was reputed to be "king of the West Coast rackets" after Bugsy Segal was murdered. Mickey moved from Robbins Drive over to North Beverly Drive 1 block north of Santa Monica Blvd. Within a month or so after the move, mob rivals blew the house up. Fortunately for Mickey he wasn't home at the time
