History & History-related items
Historically, Canoga Park was a rural agricultural community. Many fruits were grown here as well as some raising of livestock. In addition, movie and television studios used the area for location sites. The area was first known as Owensmouth. This was because of its location near the Los Angeles Aqueduct that brought water from the Owens Valley. Its founding occurred on 30 March 1912. With no independent water supply, the small community finally annexed to the city of Los Angeles on 26 February 1917, allowing for more services for the growing area. The name wasn’t changed to Canoga Park until 1930. An early major employer for the area was Rocketdyne in 1955. Other aerospace companies then arrived including Hughes Aircraft, North American Aviation and Teledyne. Many other small supporting businesses also opened in the area. In recent years, a portion of the western end of the community has been re-named West Hills and part of the eastern side of town was re-named Winnetka. Though there is more business, housing and some industrial areas, some of the area has still remained primarily rural. Canoga Park was designated an All-America City on 25 June 2006.
