History & History Related Items Cathedral City history: There is a canyon nearby that was known as Cathedral Canyon because the rock formations looked like a cathedral. The town was named for the canyon in 1925 when it began as a housing development. It was incorporated in 1981. Today, the city name is often shortened to Cat City for local residents.
