Cerritos average annual rainfall is 13 inches per year History & History Related Items Cerritos history: Cerritos was once an agricultural area and was actually called Dairy Valley until 1967. At that time, the city was renamed Cerritos for a late 1700's rancho which was in the area. The name Cerritos means "little hills" in Spanish. The name change was official when Cerritos incorporated in 1967. It was called Dairy Valley at first because there were thousands of cows in the area - over 100,000! There were also over 100,000 chickens on poultry farms. There were definitely more cows than people at that time.
