Citrus Heights was incorporated on 1 January 1997.
The area that would become Citrus Heights passed through several hands with land grants during the 1800s. The area remained rural with many farms scattered about until the Central Pacific Railroad came through around 1864. After this time, more and more settlers moved to the area. In 1910, a developer bought up large amounts of land here and subdivided it into lots for sale of 10 acres each. The company, Trainor & Desmond, decided to change the local name of Sylvan to Citrus Heights as it sounded more welcoming to the prospective buyers.
