Copperopolis was first known as Copper Canyon. After the first year, it became known as Copperopolis for obvious reasons. It was founded on 3 August 1860 when a mining district was organized. It was the site of one of the largest discoveries of copper ore in the area. The town grew rapidly, due mostly to the Civil War. A great deal of copper was needed for the shells and bullets for the Union Armies. After the war, however, the need decreased from the price of copper dramatically from 55 to 19 cents a pound. Not only did the price of copper drop, but the transportation costs soared making the cost of mining too expensive. By 1867, the mines were all idle.
