Early on, the area was used as grazing land for the cattle of the mission at San Juan Capistrano. The "Estancia," built for the herd-keepers, is now used as a local museum. First known as Harper for a local resident, the little town began to grow. Its first business was a Newport and 18th street and also included the first post office. On 11 May 1920, the name was changed to Costa Mesa. The name means a coastal tableland in spanish. Costa Mesa was an agricultural community from the beginning and continued as such for many years.
