History & History Related Items Costa Mesa history: Here is a history page for Costa Mesa. Early on, the area was used as grazing land for the cattle of the mission at San Juan Capistrano. The "Estancia," built for the herd-keepers, is now used as a local museum. First known as Harper for a local resident, the little town began to grow. Its first business was a Newport and 18th street and also included the first post office. On 11 May 1920, the name was changed to Costa Mesa. The name means a coastal tableland in spanish. Costa Mesa was an agricultural community from the beginning and continued as such for many years. Many new residents came to the area during World War II, then later returned to live with their families. Costa Mesa was incorporated 29 June 1953 with a council-manager form of government.
