As was typical of the western United States, Dorris was settled in 1907 due to the railroad coming through the area. It was named for Presley Dorris of the D Ranch. Some of the buildings from Picard, four miles away, were moved to Dorris after the formation of the town. This was a long and difficult process using logs and poles.
