Here is a history page for the Butte Valley.
As was typical of the western United States, Dorris was settled in 1907 due to the railroad coming through the area. It was named for Presley Dorris of the D Ranch. Some of the buildings from Picard, four miles away, were moved to Dorris after the formation of the town. This was a long and difficult process using logs and poles. The town was incorporated in 1908.

Attractions
Tallest Flagpole west of the Mississippi
This flagpole is 200 feet high. Because it is buried 22 feet below ground it is able to withstand very strong winds. The Dorris Lions Club was instrumental in the flagpole's existence.
