A history page for La Verne
In 1887, Isaac W. Lord was the founder of "Lordsburg," the first name for La Verne. He was los Angeles businessman who owned quite a bit of property in the area. Once he persuaded the Santa Fe Railroad to extend its lines to his area, he sent bands to play in Los Angeles and San Bernardino inviting the people to come out to Lordsburg to see what they could buy there. He was successful and many people came and built homes and businesses in Lordsburg.
Among the new residents was the L. H. Bixby family. They lived in the foothills to the north on their ranch. They named their area La Verne, which means "growing green or spring-like" in French. They also named the land company of which they were a part by the same name of La Verne. By 1912, the people of Lordsburg wanted to change their name to La Verne, but this met with resistance from Mr. Lord. After he died in March of 1917, there was no longer any resistance to the name change and the name of La Verne was voted in. There was even a mock wedding of "Miss Lordsburg" to Mr. La Verne" to show the name change to all.
