Once part of a Spanish land grant (1810) to Don Antonio Lugo, the site of the present-day city was developed as a residential center beginning in 1913. Before that time, the land was in the hands of many different ownersThe community experienced a period of rapid growth after World War II.
Lynwood was named for the wife of C. H. Sessions, who acquired 400 acres here in 1902. His wife's maiden name was Lynne Wood and they named their dairy the "Lynwood Dairy and Creamery." Later on, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a siding at this spot and called it the Lynwood siding. Later the Pacific Electric Railroad built a line through Lynwood around 1905. In 1929, they put a depot at the corner of Long Beach Blvd and Fernwood Avenue. The railroad took the dairy name of Lynwood. Home sites were created in 1913 by a group of seven men who offered the land for sale. Other business ventures occurred through the years. See this history page for much more information about Lynwood's early years.
