The community, first known as Rancho Sausal Redondo, grew after the establishment (1888) of a public transit system here. In 1900 it was renamed Manhattan, probably for Manhattan Island in New York City; the word Beach was added in 1927.

Manhattan Beach includes 2.1 miles of beach with a total of 40 acres of beach area.

Manhattan Beach is well-known for is 928 foot long pier. The Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium is located at the end of the pier and includes a Shark Tank, a Touch Tank and Tanks with baby sharks and non-native fish. It is free to the public. Tours are available.
