In only two years after the discovery of gold in the Nevada City area, over 10,000 people were here panning and mining for gold. It became one of the richest areas in the output of gold. While the mines were closed in 1942, the town remains picturesque with its many classic homes and businesses. Tourism has become a major industry as well as lumbering, electronics and crafting.
