Oakland was first part of a large rancho of 48,000 acres, the Rancho San Antonio owned by Luis Maria Peralta, a Spanish cavalry sergeant. Later, Horace W. Carpentier purchased some of the rancho as a townsite. Oakland was named for the evergreen oaks that dotted the surrounding landscape.
