The mission was founded by Father Lasuen. It was named for Louis IX of France. It was the 18th mission of 21 missions in the California mission chain. It is known as the "King of Missions" because of its large size. Nearby Camp Joseph H. Pendleton Marine Corps base was established in 1942 and has helped Oceanside prosper ever since that time.
