In 1869, Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, lawyers in this area, accepted 1,385 acres of land as payment of legal fees. The land was from the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. They began to lay out ten acre farm lots which fanned out from a central town square area. They called the center of town, the Plaza.
Originally known as Richland, it was renamed in 1875 for its orange trees.
