History & History-related items
This historical information is from the Orange Cove Website
Orange Cove was founded in 1914. Some years prior to that time, the land was in the possession of Elmer M. Sherdian. He proceeded to subdivide the acreage owned by him, and made contacts with officials of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway which caused this company to build a road through that district. As the director of the station which they proposed to erect in that region, he was seeking a suitable name. He was led by a sudden flash of inspirations to call it Orange Cove. No orange groves at that time existed here - only vast wheatfields for miles around. But the new town decided to live up to its name and Sherdian's prophetic insight and its name is now actually descriptive of its major chief industry. Orange Cove's Santa Fe Depot is now the Orange Cove City Hall. An elementary school was named after the founder of our town. E.M. Sherdian's Land Office still exists on the second floor of The Orange Cove Hardware. Orange Cove was incorporated in 1948. The city is located between two projecting spurs of the Sierra Nevadas and is thus a natural cove. The second part of its name is also fitting. Orange Cove's City Hall was formerly the Santa Fe Train Depot for that area back in the early 1900's. The first city doctor and dentist were on the second floor of The Orange Cove Hardware - and is still there. One of the cities oldest buildings is The Orange Cove Hardware, and DH Machine Inc,. A couple of years ago, it was a locksmith shop.
