History & History Related Items Pacifica history: Incorporated in 1957, Pacifica became a city, but it began long before that time when in 1769, Portola led an expedition to explore this area of California. He and his party encountered this and surrounding areas by mistake, but found it a safe and comfortable haven from their difficult travels. In 1839, Don Francisco Sanchez was given a land grant that included most of what is now Pacifica. The Sanchez Adobe is the oldest building in the county and is open to the public. For a time in the early 1900's, the area hosted tourists and summer residents. There was even a castle built here in 1908 by Henry McCloskey. As time went on, more homes were built and little communities grew. on 27 November 1957, nine of these little hamlets incorporated as Pacifica.
