History & History Related Items Rodeo history: First populated by the Ohlone Indians, this area began to be explored by the Spanish and transformed into a busy ranching, meat packing and shipping area during the 1800's. In 1890, the city was founded when the Union Stock Yard Company was formed. The name, Rodeo (pronounced Ro-DAY-o) came from the round-ups of the various livestock being processed at the plants. These round-ups were generally called Rodeos
