First industries in town were mining and cattle. Later, during the 1890's, gold was discovered. Miners thronged to the area to strike it rich. The industry waned for many years, but had a small boom in the 1930's. It was also during this time that Muroc Army Air Field was established. It is now known as Edwards Air Force Base.
