San Jacinto is the oldest incorporated city in Riverside county. The name, San Jacinto, came from Juan Bautista de Anza who came to the valley in 1774 and began his rancho named for St. Hyacinth, or Jacinto, in Spanish. The San Jacinto Rancho was a gigantic Spanish grant which extended from the mountains to Corona. The grant from the Mexican government was to the Don Jose Antonio Estudillo family in 1842. This family remained basically alone in the valley for many years. When others finally starting moving to the area, he sold off portions of his holdings, eventually deciding to begin a town. In 1868, the first school was built. In 1884, the first newspaper in the county, the San Jacinto Register, began to publish issues. In 1888, San Jacinto was incorporated.
San Jacinto high school has been around since 1885. The first campus was located at the school which is now Monte Vista Middle School. The middle school has been changed since the building of the new middle school North Mountain.
For more than 70 years, the Valley has been the home of the Ramona Pageant, an outdoor love story from California's early days.
