History & History Related Items San Luis Obispo history: Father Junipero Serra named the mission here San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, after St. Louis, Bishop of Toulouse because he was reminded of a bishop's mitre by two nearby volcanic peaks. The traditional tile roofs of the California mission began here when a tile making process was developed after several thatched roofs on the mission caught fire and burned.
