The first known resident of this area was a Suenen Indian who lived near Mt. Diablo in the late 1700's. The name of San Ramon was said to have been from a Native American named Ramon. He was a sheepherder in the area. The word San was added to Ramon to keep to the strong Spanish tradition of the area.

Economy & Industry
One of seven cities within the San Ramon Valley/Tri-Valley Market Area which gives many economic advantages. In 1982, the Bishop Ranch began development and changed San Ramon significantly. It was now, rather than basically a bedroom community for the Bay area, a major employment center. The Bishop Ranch has about 580 acres and nearly 6 million square feet of office space. Over 200 companies call it home!
