The Santa Cruz area was discovered by Don Gaspar de Portola and Father Crespi in 1769. They named the area Holy Cross at that time. The original town was named Branciforte. It was begun in 1797 by the Spanish. The village did not flourish and many of the colonists were troublemakers causing problems for the area. The present town of Santa Cruz has grown over the area that was Branciforte.
